Our story · Est. 2019 · Exeter, Devon

Built for wet Tuesdays.

We opened in 2019 to roast coffee locally and serve it in a welcoming neighbourhood café.

Read the story

(01) Where it began

We began with a 5 kg drum, a railway arch and a commitment to roast Roasted coffee beans in small batches.

The roastery has grown, but we still buy carefully, record every batch on paper and serve coffee across the same small counter.

(03) The house timeline

From one drum
to today.

The café has changed through practical improvements to the roaster, water, milk supply and counter.

  1. Chapter 01 / 04 · First roast

    2019: One arch, five kilos

Two people opened the railway arch with a second-hand 5 kg drum. The first Quay Blend sold out that week.

  2. Chapter 02 / 04 · The counter

    2021: Coffee meets the street

We moved the roaster back and built a ten-seat counter. Serving our own coffee gave us direct feedback on every batch.

  3. Chapter 03 / 04 · Devon milk

    2023: Closer by twelve miles

A farm near Cullompton began supplying milk directly. The change shortened the supply chain and improved consistency.

  4. Chapter 04 / 04 · Still learning

    Today: Four profiles, one drum

Roasting starts at 06:00 every Tuesday and Thursday. We log and taste each batch before adjusting the next roast.

(04) How we work

Four habits,
kept daily.

Nothing clever. Just a few routines we have kept since the first roast under the arch.

  1. A bag of Quay Blend beans
    01

    Buy carefully.

A short list of coffees, chosen slowly and roasted until we know them well.

  2. A tasting espresso on the counter
    02

    Write it down.

Every batch is weighed, logged on paper and tasted before the next roast.

  3. A cappuccino made with Devon milk
    03

    Keep it close.

Milk from a farm near Cullompton, twelve miles up the road.

  4. A cortado at the café counter
    04

    Same small counter.

The roastery has grown. The ten-seat counter has not.

(05) The people in the room
